On December 25, 1991, in connection with the formation of the National Guard of the Republic of Azerbaijan many skilled officers were drawn to the organization of the National Guard. On January 21, 1992, Afgan Husinov joined the National Guard and was distinguished as a skillful officer in the whole period of his service.
He spared all his skill and knowledge to the formation of the first military unit of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan. Due to the efforts and hard labor of such officers as Afgan Huseinov the National Guard has traversed a glorious road up to the present, not served any personal interest. Its main objective has been to ensure the security of the legally elected Republican President and the statehood of Azerbaijan, the security of the administrative territories of the organs of the Supreme Power, as well as that of the security of the high officials. The personnel of the National Guard took an active and successful participation in the battles against the Armenian aggressors. In the June of 1992, when the situation was critical in the battles of Fuzuli, the personnel of the National Guard demonstrated real bravery. The badly-planned military operation developed by the higher commanders of the army failed, as a result some detachments left their positions and there was a panic among the population. The skilled officers and personnel of the National Guard, including Afgan Huseinov, joined the battle, delivered a heavy blow on the Armenian formations, prevented the attack of the enemy and gave it a repulse. After this battle Captain Afgan Huseinov was made major.
The National Guard grew stronger from day to day, became firm and steadfast. It was decided to form a battalion in it. Major Afgan Huseinv, who had a great experience in the battles in Afghanistan, was appointed the first commander of this battalion. The newly appointed experienced commander raised to the necessary level of the battle capacity and training of the personnel within a limited time with the assistance of the command of the National Guard and on the account of his own organizational skill.
The grave situation in the frontline did not allow complete the personnel fully. In connection with the critical situation, which had emerged in the region of Gubadli and Lachin, the personnel of the battalion headed by Major Afgan Huseinov was sent to the said region with the Instruction 186 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan of October 26,1992. The personnel of the battalion headed personally by its commander stood face to face with the enemy, prevented the attacks of the enemy. On October 31, the battalion counter-attacked the enemy, captured many of its positions, liquidated the main forces of the enemy and fortified it positions. In this battle the commander of the battalion Major Afgan Huseinov displayed a particular bravery and courage. He raised high the name of the National Guard, made it popular. But on November 1, 1992, when the battalion started a new attack on the enemy, the bullet of the enemy hit him in the head, and he closed his eyes to the world eternally. The death of Major Afgan Huseinov did not disappoint the fighters of the battalion at all, they attacked the enemy to take revenge, suffered heavy losses, and nevertheless, they ended the battle gloriously.
The glorious road of battle of the National Guard did not remain unnoticed by the chief of the Special State Protection Service and the command of the National Guard. An appeal was submitted to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1995 on the former commander of the battalion Major Afgan Huseinov. The late Major Afgan Huseinov was made National Hero of the Republic of Azerbaijan for his matchless services with Decree 262 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan of February 15, 1995.
With the Order 63 of the chief of the Special State Protection Service, dated March 9, 1995, the name of the National Hero of Azerbaijan Major Afgan Huseinov was included into the list of the personnel of the National Guard for ever.
